Legislators expect to see another round of telecom bills

ATLANTA - Companies looking to compete with AT&T to provide home telephone service want Georgia lawmakers to streamline the approval process, much like they did for the telecommunications giant's move into the video business.

Cable television representatives are also hoping legislators will give them other boosts to compete equally with telecom firms on tax incentives and satellite television providers on tax charges.

The General Assembly this year approved a statewide franchising application for companies wanting to provide television service. Before then, cable companies had to enter into contracts with individual local governments to negotiate fees for burying cable along county- or city-owned right-of-way property.

AT&T pushed for the policy change as the formerly strictly telephone company planned on launching television service and did not want to go through individual county commissions because of time and expense.
