(AFX UK Focus) 2007-09-11 19:09 GMT: Yum Brands, McDonald's compete for China

NEW YORK (AP) - For nearly two decades in China, the KFC logo has enticed the hungry with the promise of juicy, crispy chicken.

Now, Yum Brands Inc. -- which owns KFC and Pizza Hut as well as Taco Bell in the U.S. -- has some competition for the cravings of Chinese diners.

After watching Yum gobble up much of China's emerging middle class, McDonald's, which has 800 restaurants in operation in China, is ramping up development in the country.

"The businesses are years apart maturity wise, but we believe Yum's business can remain the primary driver of corporate profitability and McDonald's' business can become a measurable contributor to its own," said J.P. Morgan analyst John Ivankoe in a note to investors, after he met with both companies' teams in China last week.

At Yum, the China business helped hasten a recovery after a string of problems in its U.S.

Sky Harbor study to look at diversity of vendors

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport wants to make sure that everyone who wants to open a restaurant or shop at the airport has an opportunity to compete. This fall, the airport plans to conduct a disparity study to gauge whether concession owners at the airport reflect the racial and gender diversity in the vendor community. More than 40 million people travel through the airport each year, so scoring a concession deal for food or a gift shop is a huge opportunity for a small business, experts say. .

Week-long event to teach successful business methods

Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce officials see the Minorities & Women in Business week, which starts Monday, as a chance to teach the importance of business networking and the best way to put it into practice.

But there's more to success than that, and the program will provide as much information as possible to help local minorities and women achieve in the world of commerce.

Learning how to build business networks and not just social networks is a key part of that effort, said Thomas Taylor, the chamber's director of minority business development.

"We want to bring together potential buyers for companies," Taylor said. "It is an opportunity for them to expand their network of associates."

The Small Business Resource Center at 600 South Court Street will host a blood drive Monday from 7:30 a.m.
