WINCHESTER —Two local companies in the fast-food franchise industry have joined to bring SONIC drive-in restaurants to the region.

H.N. Funkhouser and Co. and Allen Properties Inc. plan to open seven restaurants in the Northern Shenandoah Valley and Martinsburg-Charles Town, W.Va., areas in the next four years.

Construction will start on the first SONIC — in the Wal-Mart Supercenter plaza on U.S. 50 West — in early 2008. The second will be built later in the year in Gateway Plaza on Berryville Avenue.

The number of SONIC drive-in restaurants — best known for their 1950s-style service, including carhops on roller skates — has grown to 3,000 throughout the country.

In 1953, Troy Smith opened the first restaurant, Top Hat Drive-In, in Shawnee, Okla.
